Dr. Zakir Naik: And I do agree with you that this is a common question and I remember several years back when I was in school and when I heard this Hadith that the devils are chained in the month of Ramadhaan immediately the question that came to my mind and the question that comes to many Muslims’ mind and many non-Muslims’ is that if the devils are chained then how do people, how do human beings yet commit sins? Yusuf: Dr. Zakir No introduction to such a topic would be complete without you defining the terms so could you define the term Ramadhaan? Dr. Zakir: Alhumdulillah, Was Salaatu Was Salaam Aala Rasoolillah Wa Ala Aalihi Wa Ashaabihi Wa Ajma’een, Amma Baad. The word Ramadhaan is derived from the Arabic word ‘Ramidah’ or ‘Ar-Ramdh’ which means intense scotching heat and dryness. Its also derived from the Arabic word ‘Ramda’ which means sun baked sand. In Islamic terminology, the word Ramadhaan, it signifies the intense heat in the stomach due to thirst. When a Muslim fasts, the thirst that is there, it produces heat in the stomach which is defined as Ramadhaan. Again Ramadhaan, it has another meaning, it means that that the good deeds they scotch the sins and the evil of a Muslim. So Ramadhaan is a month in which the sins are scotched away by the good deeds like how a sun scotches the ground in the same way. And heat normally it helps in forming, molding or reshap

Dr. Zakir: There are many verses in the Quran as well as many Sahih Hadith which very well clarify that it is Fard for the Muslims who are supposed to fast that they should fast, it's a Fard. We shall deal with the details for whom it is a Fard, InshaAllah, tomorrow. If you read the Quran, Allah says in the Quran in Surah Baqarah ch. no. 2 verse no. 183  "Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo" O you who believe "kutiba AAalaykumu alssiyamu kama kutiba AAala allatheena min qablikum laAAallakum tattaqoon" Which means "O you who believe fasting has been prescribed upon you as it was prescribed to people who came before you so that you may learn self restraint." Here the Arabic word used is 'kutiba'. Kutiba means prescribed, it is written amongst the other things which are compulsory it has been prescribed, It has been made compulsory for you also fasting as it was made compulsory for people who came before you, that means it was compulsory eve

The question is, you have included to that in some of the beautiful Ahadith you have mentioned just now but.. ah.. what specific reason is it that Ramadhaan is called the month of forgiveness or known as the month of mercy? Dr. Zakir: Yes, as I mentioned earlier that our beloved Prophet Muhammad (saws) said its in a Hadith of Sahih Bukhari Vol. no. 3 Book of Fasting Hadith no. 1901 our beloved Prophet Muhammad (saws) said that “If anyone fasts in the month of Ramadhaan with the proper intention, with faith and asking reward from Allah (swt), He will forgive all your past sins” And this message is further repeated in Musnad Ahmad Vol. no. 3 Hadith no.11524 where its mentioned that “Any person who fasts in the month of Ramadhaan with the proper intention seeking the reward of Allah (swt), he will have all his previous sins atoned.” And further its mentioned in Sahih Muslim Vol. no. 1 Hadith no. 450 our beloved Prophet Muhammad

Yusuf Chambers: MashaAllah. The question to you is what should we do when Ramadhaan approaches? Dr. Zakir: The first thing we should do is we should thank Allah (swt) for making us witness this blessed month of Ramadhaan once again. And we have to thank him for his mercy and we have to ask forgiveness in this month so that all our previous sins will be forgiven.
